Very likely by John Degotardi senior, dated 1866, and exhibited at the 1866 Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne. See: Machine shop - Government dry dock, Sydney, Australia search.slv.vic.gov.au/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDispl... "Interior of the Machine shop, with labourers working on machinery. "

John Cowper Yes, I think so - still causing pollution problems 140+ years later.

The six-house terrace called 'Harbour View Terrace' built 1870 is NOT here, implying the photo is before 1870.

This is almost certainly the photograph by John Degotardi senior exhibited at the 1866 Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne, and described on the State Library of Victoria catalogue as follows - "Includes the Gasworks chimney bearing a plaque reading 'GASWORKS 1840' and a gasometer made of iron in the foreground. Balmain can be seen across the water."
Gas Light Company's Head Station on the Eastern Shore of Darling Harbour / the back ground shewing portions of the Town of Balmain. / Sydney. N.S.Wales. 1866.

The house at centre on Potts Point is 'Bomera' (1856), before the building of 'Tarana' (1889) next door. See history - www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/ahdb/search.pl?mode=place_... 'Bomera' was taken over by the NSW State Government in 1890 to develop new wharves.
