    It’s fascinating to see so many dolls in the photograph. I wonder if that was a custom; and was it done just for “picture day”, or did dolls regularly accompany some girls to school. Reading about the Balmain Public School is equally interesting! It dates back to the 1860’s. By 1883, the school enrollment was 1,269 children! (Enrollment for 2012 was 230 students). The Balmain Public School identifies this photo as “Class 2A - 1917”.

    Pixel Wrangler We have quite a few class photos from this era in this series. And many of these include toys or educational tools / instruments. It must have been the trend of the day!

You have to be a bit careful with which of the five values you use - I used the retail price index here, and thought the current worth rather low - like a modern airfare - until I remembered it was one way, not return as the airfare.
