Henry Parkes lived at Hampton Villa Balmain between 1888-1892.

Edward Hunt built ‘Hampton Villa’ in the 1840s. Henry Parkes was Premier up to 1891, while a tenant in the house. He severely injured his leg in a riding fall in 1889 and could not travel, hence a number of NSW Government Cabinet meetings were held at Hampton Villa. Not the "Hawkesbury River", but the collapse of the old Glebe Island Bridge in August 1899. The new bridge was being built alongside; some of the new embankment slipped over and smashed the old wooden structure.
