My first image was of censors. I imagine many American Jews served as military censors during WWI and WWII as many had language skills. I wonder how many were in OSS and the like.

It is an interesting question. Here at the Leo Baeck Institute we are focused very much on the experience of German-speaking Jews, many of whom served on the German side in the First World War (as in this photo). I'm unsure how many served in the OSS and the like, but German-speaking Jews who later fled Nazi Europe and served in the allied forces were definitely used in the OSS, as translators and interpreters, and after the war as part of the war crime tribunals and locating looted art.

Thanks. These would all make fascinating stories.

We have many examples of such stories in our archive. You can search for them in our catalog: some of them have been digitized and are available online. I would recommend searching via the Digital Assets page of the Center for Jewish History, at digital.cjh.org.
