See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dole Given the date on the photo (June 28, 1927), and the subsequent posting of a photo of aviator Lt. Lester J. Maitland (US Army Air Corps) in this latest group of LoC photos, I suspect photos related to the ill-fated Dole Air Race (aka "Dole Air Derby" or "Dole Derby") somehow snuck into this latest posting of Bain photos by the LoC. As an aside, since Lt. Maitland and co-pilot Lt. Albert Hegenberger were Army Air Corps aviators flying an Army Air Corps aircraft, they were ineligible for the Dole Air Race prize upon the completion of their successful milestone flight from Oakland, CA to Wheeler Field, Oahu in June 1927. The story of the subsequent Dole Air Race would ultimately be one of the most triumphant and tragic chapters in the history of aviation.
