I wonder if the Anglicised name was used originally, and when it was changed back to its current name of "Franz Joseph Glacier".
Wikipedia says: The glacier was named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria by the German explorer, Julius von Haast, in 1865.
I'm sure Haast wouldn't have used the English version, would he?!

Hi nzdectective. I wondered about the name too - in fact, it was one of the reasons I added these images to the set. Like you, I doubt Haast would have used that version!

I'll ask our curators if they have any clues as to why 'Francis Joseph' has been used here.
