    ...Some time before 1847 John Robertson built a fishery cottage by the road near Wine Island, and this soon became a hotel: 'He thus avoids the expensive luxury of Irish hospitality in which "the Martins" used so freely to indulge,' as Scott sarcastically noted. Under Robertson's successor it was known as the Angler's Hotel, and was advertised as follows: Walter Blackadder, manager of the Ballynahinch fishery, having now Rebuilt and Refurbished the above hotel in Connemara for the accommodation of anglers and tourists, trusts by observing a good Cuisine, Wines, Cleanliness and the general comfort of visitors, that he may solicit a small share of their patronage, as the Hotel is beautifully situated for Salmon and Sea Trout fishing, Sea Bathing and Seal Shooting.     According to this extract from the Royal Commission on Irish Inland Fisheries, Blackadder may have left by 1900. Certainly no Blackadder appears in the 1901 census for County Galway. (In fact, there are only a half-dozen Blackadder families in the entire country for the 1901 census. Most in Dublin or Antrim...) It doesn't push down the upper-date however, as it seems likely it was still called "Blackadders" for some period after. (In the Fisheries Commission report one of those giving evidence refers to it as "Blackadders" even though - in the same page of evidence - Blackadder is acknowledged as having left...) To my eye, the attire of the man (poser?) in the boat would suggest early 1900s....
