    @ Wardie44B - I had another look, and still think the two photos are taken at the same time (within a few minutes). There are differences caused by the strong sunshine and contrast in this picture - a building disappeared (was it the Hotel Australia?). This photo is a full plate glass negative; the other is half plate. In this photo the tram wires have been purposely whited out (see persistent URL). The best proof comes from the two carts on the left hand kerb (see note) - the one in front has the same arrangement of parcels in both pictures - see Persistent URL. The tram wires (post December 1899) and the absence of electric lights (pre 1904) should help date the photos. Or maybe I missed something?!

    The reference to "Castlereagh Street" (on the street sign on the corner) is confusing. It is obviously the back of the Lands Department Building at the corner of Bent St and what is now Loftus St. It turns out that Loftus St used to be called Castlereagh St (they are aligned); also Young St used to be called Elizabeth St. See this 1858 interactive map - www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.map-rm1272-sd&rgn=0... Since only the northern section of the Lands Department Building is finished here, I would put the date at c.1885. See - www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/4057365692/
