Daniel V. Asay was my great-great-grandfather and the Gull was built for him by Joseph Lake. I haven't yet discovered the exact year it was built but it was mentioned in an article in the Red Bank Register as early as 1906. He sold it in 1917 to Robert Johnson.

In February, 1914, entrants from the North Shrewsbury and South Shrewsbury Ice Yacht Clubs contentended for the annual North American Ice Yacht championship on the Shrewsbury River, in Red Bank, New Jersey. Aha! Iceboat Gull is mentioned in a New Jersey race in this article from the New York Times, 6 January 1918. -22 January 1918 NY Times mentions a collision between Gull and Tyro in a race at Red Bank, New Jersey. Given the adjacent photo of crowds on the ice is labeled "At Red Bank", it seems likely this is the site of these photos.

Nice old gaff-rigged stern-steering sloop. This was once the most ppular design, way back when...

the boat has an interesting design. I never seen anything like that and it doesn't look to stable if there were heavy winds.

The third class Gull was built specifically for my great-great-grandfather, Daniel V. Asay, by Joseph Lake. I haven't yet discovered the exact year it was built but it was mentioned in an article in the Red Bank Register in 1906. He sold it in 1917 to Robert Johnson. Daniel Asay lived in Red Bank, N.J., and sailed on the North Shrewsbury River.

So cool! I was independently browsing the still picture archives this morning, though I didn't see this image then. I love seagulls and am just taken by this cheeky little guy making the best out of a hunk of floating debris.
