The picture shows the German fighter ace Ernst Udet coming back to his Jagdstaffel after a parachute escape from his Fokker D.VII on 28 June 1918. In the background is fighter ace Heinrich Dreckmann {sometimes also spelled as Drekmann). The picture is included in the biography of Ernst Udet which first appeared during World War 2. Theodore Hall was not a man to easily throw away a picture I think.
