Adolph Olson "A.O." Eberhart, (1870-1944). Born in Sweden, "A.O." came to Minnesota in 1881. He became Governor of Minnesota when John Albert Johnson died in office, serving from 1909 to 1915 . He ran and lost in the Republican primary for the United States Senate in 1916. –Minnesota Legislative Reference Library While guessing who the photographer was from the cropped photo-credit is a bit like playing (the US game show) Wheel of Fortune, my hit is it was Alfred Miller of Minneapolis/Saint Paul – in part because of this photograph of Governor Eberhart taken by Alfred Miller in 1913.

Under Governor Eberhart, in 1913 Minnesota established the first economy and efficiency commission of any political jurisdiction anywhere. Also in 1913, as part of a reform wave, Minnesota made its legislature nonpartisan.

This is one of those photographs found in the George Grantham Bain Collection (described here) where the folks at Bain News Service acquired the work of another photographer to distribute, and in the process of copying it, cut off part of the original credit. Upon viewing the largest digital file over in the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (available here), it looks like it's Alfred W- of Minneapolis, so the mystery may continue!
