The man behind it, Bindon B. Stoney in the 1901 census as Civil Engineer. From the dib we learn he had other interests: After attending TCD, where in 1850 he obtained his BA and a diploma in civil engineering with distinction, he immediately joined his elder brother at the observatory of William Parsons, 3rd earl of Rosse (qv), at Parsonstown (Birr) to assist with astronomical observations using what was then the world's largest telescope. Stoney improved the known delineation of nebulae and determined the spiral nature of the great nebula in Andromeda.

At the bottom edge appear to be two tugs (to my untrained eye). A picture in the Irish Independent on Wednesday 21 March 1956 shows "The British steamer Cotopaxi being taken from her berth at Alexandra Basin by the Port tug Coliemore after she had discharged the general cargo she had brought from South America. "... LONDON, Dec. 28. The English army of occupation has left Ireland. The most vivid Celtic imagination never guessed at the scenes which accompanied the embarkation. As the regiments marched to the Dublin Docks they were cheered continually. Women rushed to kiss officers and men alike. Everyone seemed to be waving a tiny Union Jack and shouting "Come back soon." The crowd was so dense that the troops had to abandon all idea of military formation, and struggled through to the dock gates in single file. The ships in the river added to the confusion by sounding sirens and fog-horn. It really seemed that the departure of the hated army of occupation must be the arrival of a long-desired relief column, for nothing like the enthusiasm displayed has been seen since the little British army marched through Belgium after the armistice in November 1918.
The grim irony of the situation was heightened by the fact that the Sinn Fein governors of Ireland, from Mr. Cosgrave downwards, are living in daily dread of death. ... ..."
