Schwarzer and the rest of the crew of B-24 The Niagara Special had all successfully survived baling out over liberated French territory returning from a raid in January 1945 www.b24.net/stories/niagara.htm His name appears on the crew lists for the sight seeing 'Trolley Missions' over Germany immediately post war so perhaps 'shot down' refers to the bale-out incident over France...after which they flew more missions!

I think that the United States Army should still use the "Pink and Green" uniform!

I agree. I also think the Air Force should still be a branch of the Army. "Pinks and Greens" were very striking. Today's uniforms are just really...blah. And they're all 100% polyester so, nothing drapes like this stuff did! Better looking and better made... Sigh. At that time as well, men could take regulation cloth and have it tailored into amazing adaptations of the uniform. Tailor made and cut down four pockets were the rage among the AAF officers in Europe. Can't get away with that no more in today's army of polyester digitalis.

I also like the Silver Tan Summer Uniform of the United States Air Force that they had into the 70's!

Possibly this accident: 50446 (392 BG, 578 BS, (B-24 named) "Is This Trip Necessary", later "J. C. Poolhall") crashed Apr 14, 1945 on takeoff after twin engine failure from Wendling airfield, UK. 8 killed, no waist gunner aboard.
