John Purroy Mitchel was elected (on a fusion ticket) to succeed Acting Mayor Ardolph Loges Kline. Kline, the head of the Board of Aldermen, had become acting mayor when Mayor William Jay Gaynor died, on September 10, 1913. Kline filled out Gaynor's term until the end of the year.

Rafael Reyes Prieto (December 5, 1849, Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Boyacá, Colombia – February 18, 1921, Bogotá) was commander in chief of the Colombian National Army and President of Colombia (1904-1909). In his years as president he received money from the United States as part of the indemnity for Panama. This brought years of progress to Colombia but clearly the North American country got more profit from the Panama Canal. After being president Reyes was exiled from Colombia, after suffering several attempts to kill him. Ardent Socialist and social reformer; author of the shocking bestseller, "The Jungle," (1906) a novel that exposed deplorable conditions in the meatpacking industry in Chicago. In 1914, the date of this photo, the movie version of "The Jungle" was released. Sinclair himself appeared at the beginning and end of the film. Born in Baltimore, Sinclair as a child moved with his family to New York City, and grew up there.
