Katherine "Katie" McGirr was about eight years old when she survived exposure during an 1888 blizzard, blind and deaf. Two years later she was admitted to the New York Institute for the Deaf. She's mentioned by name in Helen Keller's "The Story of My Life." In her 20s, she was considered to be able to read more different kinds of text for the blind than anyone else (braille, plus five other systems).

Many people don't know that Helen Keller became deaf and blind at the age of 19 months because of an illness. She wasn't born with it; therefore, it was that much more frustrating for her when she obtained those disabilities. That was probably a cause of her being so uncooperative as a child. Anne Macy Sullivan, her teacher, is shown in the picture by her side. She helped Helen embrace her situation and learn to live to inspire others for years to come.
