FURIOUS (LOC)

The Royal Navy (modified) Courageous-class battlecruiser HMS Furious, as initially completed with its flight deck (for launching and recovering aircraft) forward of its superstructure while retaining a single 18-inch gun turret aft. This arrangement for operating aircraft was unwieldy as it sounds, so in converting the ship into an aircraft carrier in November 1917 the aft turret was removed and an additional flight deck was added aft of the superstructure. The Royal Navy quickly came to the realization that an aircraft carrier featuring two separate flight decks separated by an immense superstructure in the middle was not an optimal arrangement. Accordingly, HMS Furious would undergo a much more significant conversion and re-build between June 1921 and September 1925. This was made possible by the removal of her superstructure. She'd serve the Royal Navy up until September 1944, when her age and the delivery of much more capable purpose-built escort and full-size aircraft carriers made her redundant.
