    Barracuda was a 33' long trunk cabin motor launch built in Amityville, NY in 1916 for August Belmont, Jr. From September 5-12, 1916 Barracuda and other power yachts of the areatook part in a week of Naval Maneuvers in the New York area. They practiced signalling, sub hunting, mine sweeping. When not signalling, sailing or saluting the owners hung out at the (oft mentioned in this photostream) Atlantic Yacht Club. Barracuda was offered to the Navy for service in 1917, and was inspected and even assigned Hull no. SP-23, but never actually entered Navy service. Belmont himself volunteered for the Army in 1917 (at age 65!) and served as a Major in the Quartermaster Corps in France. (His wife named a colt born during his absence after him. Man o'War went on to have a pretty good racing career
