Sending pigeons? (LOC)

  • Wystan said:
August, 1913: Before the Suffragette Caravan left New York for Boston, pulled by a balky horse that the ladies had named "Asquith," (after the British prime minister, also balky in support of woman suffrage) the participants (three British suffragettes and an American Salvation Army colonel -- with tambourine) released several Boston homing pigeons, whose flight home was supposed to precede their own arrival in that city. Here is a contemporary newspaper clipping about the event: www.elizabethfreeman.org/PDF/suffrage/bostonPigeons_big.pdf

Evidently, the august New York Times completely ignored this publicity stunt.
  • Kristi (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan: Thanks for the link to the clipping. Based on that information and other images of the ladies, these are Elisabeth Freeman and Elsie McKenzie (l to r), so we will add that information to this record when we update.
