  This insignia was not used after May 1942

  The insignia regs deleted the 'meatball' starting May '42, but that didn't necessarily mean the manufacturers automatically (and immediately) received the notification to change. I'm betting that '1943 Feb.' reference was when the transparency was filed with the LOC. The bigger puzzle to me is, What the heck is she painting on? It's not a Vengeance fuselage, it's some kind of fabric-covered wing. What was Vultee building under license at that time (she's wearing a Vultee patch on her shirt) that would have had fabric-covered wings?

  I think I just figured out the answer to my own question - most likely a Stinson/Vultee L-1 Vigilant wing panel - I believe you're looking at the top side of a left wing assembly.
