This appears to be one of several débutante announcement photographs of Margaret Resler Warren of New York City, who was introduced to society on December 9, 1913, with a reception, dinner and dance. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elliott Warren, Margaret was a descendant of Revolutionary War General Warren of Bunker Hill. She was a graduate of The Spence School. Her father was President of the Lincoln National Bank. [1] [2]

A different photograph of Miss Warren, by Campbell Studios, appeared in the October 19, 1913, New York Times, however the accompanying article seems to have been, perhaps, cut of débutante announcements. A variant of the above pose, by Mishkin Studios, is in the Bain Collection (shown below) of The Library of Congress, and will no doubt find its way to Flickr ;)
                                   

On January 22, 1921, Margaret Warren married Shannon Lord Meany (b.1892), the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward P. Meany (b.1854) of Alnwick Hall, Convent, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Princeton and served as a captain during the war. Their engagement was announced in October, 1920. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Margaret and Shannon Meany separated in 1939, and she was awarded a divorce in Reno in 1940. [7] [8]

This appears to be the former Estelle Barbour (1878-1960) who was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, near Detroit. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Barbour, her father was a Detroit manufacturer. [1] [2] Estelle Barbour married George S. Stillman of New York City, in Detroit on April 24, 1906. George Schley Stillman (1879–1907), a son of J.F. Stillman of New York City, "was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Yale University where he was selected as a first-team All-American at the tackle position in both 1899 and 1900. Stillman coached the 1901 Yale football team to a record of 11–1–1. The team was later recognized as a national champion by Parke H. Davis." –Wikipedia Married less than a year, George Stillman died of meningitis in 1907 after contracting typhoid fever. Twenty three years later Mrs. Estelle Barbour Stillman married Hobart C. Chatfield-Taylor (1865-1945) of Santa Barbara, California, on June 23, 1920. She was 45 at the time, he was 55. Long prominent in Chicago society, Hobart Chatfield-Taylor was an author of several novels. His first wife, the late Rose Farwell, was the daughter of the late United States Senator Farwell, of Illinois, and Rose and Estelle were long-time friends. A wedding-day photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Hobart C. Chatfield-Taylor taken as they left the church appeared in The New York Tribune. –LOC Chronicling America, [3]

The photo shows Miss Noel Johnston (left) and Miss Marie Tailer of New York City, aboard the RMS Olympic, departing New York.. Another photo taken at the time by photographers Underwood & Underwood was published in The Washington Times on July 09, 1914 (Home Edition, Page 3) — LOC Chronicling America The caption reads: "Miss Tailer has been motoring abroad for the last ten weeks, driving her own car upwards of 5,000 miles. She said she was looking forward to an athletic summer in the Berkshires. Miss Tailer said the best feature of Europe are the roads, which are better than the ones in this country. She also denied she was engaged." Her engagement was announced five months later. Marie Tailer (c.1895-1937), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lee Tailer, was married November 3, 1915, to S. Bryce Wing (c1890-1975), son of Mr and Mrs L. Stuart Wing of New York.  Marie died of a heart attack in 1937, and her husband remarried in 1939. [1] [2] [3] Noel Johnston (d.1979), daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Herbert Johnson, was married April 14, 1915, to William H. Appleton (b.1883). He was the son of William Worthen Appleton and the late Anna Dublois Sargent Appleton. Mr. Appleton, a Harvard graduate, was in the cotton brokerage business with Stephen M. Weld & Co. He later joined the insurance firm of John C. Paige & Co. Inc. Miss Johnston was the granddaughter of the late John Taylor Johnson, who for many years was President of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Their engagement was announced in September, 1914, immediately after Noel returned from Europe. [4] [5] On December 31, 1915, they gave birth to a son, William Worthen Appleton, II., who, after graduating from Harvard, taught at Columbia for more than thirty years. [6] [7] Some years later Mrs. Noel Johnston Appleton married D. Wooster King, of New York City, on September 24, 1932. [8]  

Marie Tailer – "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"

During his visit to Newport, Rhode Island in 1913, His Imperial Highness, The Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich of Russia (1866-1933), was struck by the beauty of American women. According to published reports, The Grand Duke "collected photographs of the women he met in Newport, especially at The Casino and Bailey's Beach."

The Grand Duke was particularity smitten by Miss Marie Tailer of New York City, who was visiting Newport at that time, and he was "anxious to obtain a photograph of her". He declared that Miss Tailer was "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". [1]

This pronouncement was picked up by newspapers across the country (if not the world), and photos of Miss Tailer were published for some years afterwards -- always with the "Most Beautiful Girl in the World" moniker in the caption. [2]
