  montanapch1 Would you believe . . . in the days before sports agents and endorsement contracts athletes controlled how their images were used by copyrighting themselves. The big "C" in a circle is the universal copyright symbol and tells all photographers that his image is not to be used for commercial purposes without compensation. No? OK, Oscar R. Benson competed for the Chicago Athletic Association. His throw of 149'7" won 1st prize at the Junior Outdoor Track & Field Meet at Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ on Sep 8, 1916. He placed third in the Senior division the next day against P. Ryan of the Irish-American Athletic Club of New York, who threw 174'8".

  Just watched some of the hammer throwing at the Commonwealth Games and the throwing area, as usual, had huge regulation safety netting. Amazing that there's no netting in this photo. Was that because this is just a posed photo and the photographer thought the netting would have spoiled the picture, or did they not use netting back then?
