From the road signs, I would say that the legend is erroneous. This checkpoint was 9 km from Ettingen and 16 km from Karlsruhe, so this is most likely the checkpoint between the French and the American occupation zones. The British occupation zone was the the NW corner of Germany, several hundred kilometers North of this photo.
