Wow!

wow, the colors that do show through here are very vivid. I really like the composition of this photo also.

Feels like Unreal....like a dream. More than 20 people in the water like a family and everyone in the water is looking at the camera, and ALL of them are dressing black suits! The composition is really really good. It seems to be a painting composition. THIS IS ODD.

I confess, I wasn't familiar with autochromes before browsing this collection. I love how they brings the past "to life," to use the cliche. We're not used to thinking of the early 1900s in color... Being in "costumes" rather than period clothes, these kids look like photos of my sisters and I in the 60s. I love it. Thanks.

Agree with elemsee. While we "know" the past wasn't b&w I know my mind tends to think of it that way. Seeing these early images "in color" reminds me that what my great-grandmother saw "in her day" was real life in all it's glorious color - not b&w monochrone.

I'm confused by the flag, which has staggered rows of stars, meaning it 's not a 48-star flag (after 1912) but a 46-star flag (1908-1912) or a 45-star flag (1896-1908). If this photo was taken in 1918, the kids were using a flag that was out of date and at least six years old, maybe as much as 12 years old.

48-star flags with staggered rows were very common in the early 20th century, even before New Mexico and Arizona were admitted to statehood. I have a few examples dated 1908-1910, and even one small silk example with a sticker on it saying it was used at the Columbus day celebration in 1892.

Things haven't changed that much.

Was walking this block last month with my son. Add a few barricades to block traffic and yes it still looks very much the same. Nice that some cities here can preserve history.
