    Carol Maddock I was scouring the background of the portrait for the registers but it is the books beside the frame. Was he a Scottish lord then?

    Probably the first earl (1764-1835), there were several. Was a member of the FRS and the FSA, hence the learned books. Seat was Charville Castle

    Unfortunately they were a bit imaginative when it came to naming, so there were two Earls of Charleville called Charles William Bury plus two more with another name added in the middle. I think it's probably the first earl, though, based on his clothes.
