LOC -- Your title needs emending -- "Grosser," not "Grosse" -- see the inscription on the lifesaving flotation ring.

Jim Rees said:
Also it's "Kurfürst," with an umlaut.

Anne (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan and Jim Rees: Thanks for pointing out the typos. We'll fix them next time we update the record.

The fellow in the center, wearing a business suit, looks like Lionel Carden, the British envoy to Mexico, who in October 1913 (about the time of the Volturno disaster) was expelled by Carranza and recalled to London, for his criticism of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson:

Capt. Seebohm (LOC)

A Capt. Seebohm commanded the German cruiser, Bremen. See June 12, 1912 NYT query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A06EFD7153CE633A... "GERMAN ADMIRAL TOASTS PRESIDENT; Mayor Gaynor Responds by Toasting the Kaiser at the Luncheon on the Moltke. Rear Admiral von Rebeur-Paschwitz, commanding the visiting German squadron, was the host of Mayor Gaynor and hundreds of other well-known New Yorkers aboard his flagship, the battle cruiser Moltke, yesterday afternoon. The occasion was the Admiral's official reception to more than 2,000 invited guests, and the reception was preceded by an official luncheon on board of each of the three visiting warships, the luncheon guests numbering about fifty." The Bremen was one of the 3 warships and Seebohm hosted the lunch aboard.
