More of a "bonfire day" than a "bonfire night". I hope they all stood further upwind or those heavy dresses and shawls would reek of smoke when they went back inside the house.

Hi, Thanks for your comments! I agree that it looks really strange that they stood so close to the fire in this image, especially as there were children and animals within reach of the smoke and flames as well! Health and safety was certainly not as much of a priority in 1853!!
