(Freemans Journal, 4 January 1821) Newspaper snippet includes the word "Brevet" about Summerfield. Hadn't come across that before. OED says brevet is "A former type of military commission conferred especially for outstanding service, by which an officer was promoted to a higher rank without the corresponding pay.
