B-50D-95-BO, s/n 48-096. Converted to EB-50D mothership for Bell X-2 program. Bell X-2, s/n 46-675, exploded while being carried by this aircraft during a captive liquid oxygen top off test on 12 May 1953. The X-2 had to be jettisoned and crashed into Lake Ontario. Sadly, Bell test pilot Jean "Skip" Ziegler was still strapped in the X-2 cockpit when it was dropped. Bell flight engineer Frank Wolko apparently also fell from the EB-50 in the explosion. Neither body was recovered. The EB-50D made an emergency landing at Niagara Falls Airport, NY, but was DBR and never flew again.
