  Surely not Scotland - I've never seen anything like that in Scotland, even if it has since burned down, but it would have been famous even if that had happened. Nearest thing it reminds me of is Cardiff Castle, but I wonder if this is not UK at all. Googling not returning any joy at the moment...

  The chapel on the right is an odd design - not very British at all. I've seen spires like that with the four small turrets at the corners in Germany and central Europe, such as the Gross St Martin in Koln. The large tower has vague hints of Mudejar/Spanish in the crenellations. But of course the whole thing is an eclectic fantasia which could be drawing elements from all over Europe to suit the owner's whim. It's also unusual however to see a gothic revival castle with such seriously forbidding exterior walls, which makes me wonder if it is actually a massive restoration and transformation of a genuine medieval construction. Most 19th century castle builders liked the look of a gothic pile but still wanted plenty of light and home comforts. I'm guessing that's a moat or lake in the foreground as well.

  It is the weirdest looking thing. Almost like a folly but a bit too big by far. The main turret/tower seems to have a window/stained glass window all the way down one side which would not be all that practical for something intended as a fortress.
