Lionel Wellesly Armstrong Son of Wallesley Armstrong and Isabella Armstrong. Born 18th June 1881 and Christened on 4th September of that year at St George’s, Bloomsbury. His, and his parent’s address at the time was 21 Montagu Street, Bloomsbury – overlooking the British Museum. His fathers occupation is recorded in the parish register as Captain. I have not been able to find any further trace of his parents. The 1881 census records him as an infant of 9 months in the care of Elizabeth Lockyer, whose home was at Grosvenor Cottage, Twickenham. The 1891 census records him as a boarding pupil at the Collegiate School, Walmer, Kent. He marries to Frances Nina Vallance Perkins in the third quarter of 1903 in the Borough of Croydon. The 1911 census records him living at 8 Buckingham Palace Mansions, off Lower Grosvenor Place, London, with his wife, their son Harold Sidney [b.1906 Croydon] a Governess [for his son] and two domestic servants. Lionel’s occupation is recorded as Stockbroker. London Gazette entries read; 18th December 1914 – The under mentioned Temp. Lieuts. To be Temp. Captains effective 1st December 1914..... This brings into question the following entry; 13th August 1920 – Temp. Captain L W Armstrong relinquishes his commission on completion of service. 9th March 1919, and retains the rank of Captain. Died 20th September 1952 while resident at Stanley House Hotel, Eastbourne, Sussex. The national Probate Calendar records that his estate was £10160 7s 7d.

I thought Austro-Hungary was land-locked. Where was its navy based?

Before the First World War the empire had ports on the Adriatic, in areas that subsequently became part of Italy and Yugoslavia. Trieste was probably the most important, although the Austrian emperor also controlled Venice for a while.

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Thanks. Kind of you to take trouble to reply. FrigateRN I love this set too. I'm a Londoner who had three wonderful years working in Newcastle 1969-1972 and sad I had to leave. And some of my immigrant great-grandfolks first settled in now-demolished streets near St.James's Park.
