Since this at the same location as some photos of dog owners following this in the stream, it is presumably the James Mortimer who was a dog judge and was superintendent of the Westminster Kennel Club show in New York for some years. Rossi, Captain G.C.V. Rifles, Rossiville 20th June. The substance being that he had disciplined a volunteer Private, Mr. Robertson, who had not saluted Rossi. nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13259486 29 August 1872: "Volunteer Captain Rossi has been fined 5s. for assaulting Sergeant Mawson." [ ref. nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13262748 ] 29 December 1873: " The Captain of the Goulburn Corps appears to be an imperious, exacting and quarrelsome man." (Captain Rossi) nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5878427 22 December 1886: "EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDINGS AT THE GOULBURN CATHEDRAL" " Captain Rossi, the senior trustee of the land upon which St. Saviour's Cathedral is built, sent a messanger for the keys of the building last evening, and, obtaining it, stayed in the cathedral all night. This morning, when an entrance was sought to the cathedral to hold service, the doors were found to be locked...." and " ... a tablet to the memory of Captain Rossi's father and mother, and which was formerly in the old cathedral on which the site of the present cathedral stands, had been affixed to the northern wall of the transcept. .." On page 11 s in the Sydney Morning Herald of Saturday 15 January 1887 appears a story: The Goulburn Cathedral Affair (by telegraph to the Herald) Goulburn, Wednesday "Messrs Finlay, Hayes,and Shepherd, members of the Cathedral Council, went into the building on Tuesday night at 7 o'clock.... ... about 5 o'clock Wednesday morning ... ... ... Mr. Rossi said he would not move, upon which two of them with the assistance of one of the guards, impelled him out onto the footpath. ... Mr. Rossi maintained his position on the footpath until others had seen it. A crowd of about 70 or 80 persons collected. Someone suggested that a photographer be sent for, which was done, and a photograph was taken of Mr. Rossi in the position in which he wsa left by the ejectors. ..." ref. nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18891486 So, the photograph was taken on Wednesday 12 January 1887.
