    Was this on Wednesday, 22 June 1932? The Irish Press reported in Thursday 23rd's paper about "cheering crowds" and "high-pitched enthusiasm" as the Papal Legate [Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri] and other church dignitaries drove and then processed to the Pro-Cathedral.
    A mighty roar from three thousand throats signalled his arrival. Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri was evidently gratified by the warmth of the welcome. He smiled and blessed those who had greeted him. Accompanied by his suite he entered the Pro-Cathedral. A few minutes earlier a distinguished procession of the nine cardinals attending the Eucharistic Congress walked in single file to the Pro-Cathedral. Cardinal MacRory was at the rear... Catholic Boy Scouts, carrying their standard colours, and a company of Catholic Sea Scouts from the Port of Galway, the nucleus of the Free State Mercantile Marine, formed the guard of honour.
    Unsurprisingly, Dev and Sean T. O'Kelly were there, and the ever popular Alfie Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin (the "Shaking Hand of Dublin"). I should be able to get an approximate time of days from one of the newspaper reports.

    My father was born on that day and received the name "Lorenzo" as his third Christian name - no doubt to honour the cardinal!

    St Stephen's Cathedral was opened on 17 May 1874,2 superseding Old St Stephen's, which still stands alongside it. A Gothic Revival building built of porphyry and freestone, the new Cathedral was built in stages: The foundation stone was laid in 1863, with the intention of constructing a grand building to the design of architect Benjamin Backhouse. With the economic crisis of the 1860s, work on the building ceased in 1864, and when construction was resumed in 1870, it was to a smaller and simplified design by the Brisbane architect, R. George Suter. Two sandstone towers were added in 1884, and the sacristy and simple transepts were added in 1922.3 Archbishop James Duhig planned for a completely new Holy Name Cathedral (opposite All Hallows' Convent), for which the foundation stone was laid in September 1928, but these plans never proceeded. At this time, three new chapels were added at the east end, the gallery was removed from the west end, and the original towers (which had already been removed) were replaced.
