Can't imagine being a photographer on that beach!
The equipment was big and heavy and there was not a lot of help with getting the shot right. Youhad to know what you were doing.

There is only one officer with the name Bridges in the official records — that of Major General Sir William Throsby Bridges. He died on 18 May, 1915, 24 days after this photograph was taken, of wounds received at sea. General Bridges was the only soldier whose body was brought back to Australia for burial. "Major General Sir William Throsby BRIDGES (K.C.B. C.M.G. Queen's South Africa Medal. Mentioned in despatches (Gallipoli)), 1st Aust Div., AIF. Born Greenock, Scotland. Married; Soldier, of 21 Tintern Avenue, Toorak, Melbourne, Victoria. Next of kin: Wife; Lady Edith Bridges (nèe Dawson), of same address. Died of wounds at Sea: aboard HMHS 'Gascon', on 18 May 1915, aged 55. Grave: Duntroon, Canberra ACT. This is not Anzac Cove, but W beach at the south of the peninsula. Anzac Cove was a much more confined space with just a strip of narrow beach. After that the land rises steep to a plateau. This gave Anzac Cove protection against Turkish artillery fire. W-beach is a much more open space with a V shaped beach at the end of a gully. Nowadays you can reach this beach even with a touring car. The remnants of the piers can still be seen along the waterfront. www.flickr.com/photos/hansderegt/3411651456/in/set-721576...

An eerie shot - the fading with time adds a certain poignancy to the smiles on the faces of these men - can't help but wonder what happened to them on that day...

my great grandad was there that day, he died on the first day of the landings, we dont have a photos of him in his uniform... very sad plan to go to the anzac day service in turkey next year.

The smiles on those young faces strike at my heart... The events of Gallipoli still throw up a howl of pain in so many of us.
