I'm thinking this is the Delegation from Pennsylvania at a republican convention in Chicago. Could be 1912, 1916, or 1920. I doubt it's 1908.

Okay, there is another photo at the following link: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163140655/in/s... Is it possible that it is the Oklahoma Delegation and Penn Del. were promenading? These are the same two women in both photos, wearing the same outfits.

Good catch! The two women here and two of the men behind them are in the other picture as well. Chances are the Oklahomans are the ones on the left in the other picture, with the signs hanging from their jackets.

Could this photo and the other one have been taken at the Progressive Party ("Bull Moose") convention at the Coliseum in Chicago, in August, 1912? That convention was held in the same venue as the Republican Convention had been, in June. The date inscribed on the negative, in the lower right corner, appears to start with an "8" -- for August. A quarter of the delegates to the Progressives' convention were women (who were still denied the vote), and the convention nominated former President Theodore Roosevelt for President, and Governor Hiram Johnson of California for Vice President.

The 1912 Progressive Party Convention, that nominated Teddy Roosevelt for President and Governor Hiram Johnson of California for Vice President, was held at the same venue, in August.

John F. Deitz, also known as the Defender of the Cameron Dam, was born April 3, 1861 in Winneconne, Wisconsin. Deitz fought the logging industry in Wisconsin. This is a story I have heard all my life... I use to ride my bicycle by the Meadow Creek Cemetery and see the Deitz family stone and know he was buried there... His story is not a pleasant one. He made people like Fighting Bob LaFollette uncomfortable and in the end his own ego did him in. He had won, then he got made pulled a gun and lost (in the alley near today's Winter Coop). One was either his friend or an enemy, he polarized the world around him and the great sadness to the story is the price his children paid for it... Good or bad it is a Northwoods story... I put the webpage together that Bobadoc mentions... it includes more pictures, a time line and a bibliography of the subject. When you look at the picture of his daughter know that she was wounded severely and almost died from it. Any questions or comments about the story are welcomed, the community of Winter continues to struggle to protect the site and as a community of less than 400 souls it is tough, but it is a piece of history worth preserving. Deitz was on trial starting May 2, 1911 in Hayward, Wisconsin for the murder of a deputy on October 8, 1910.
