    From wikipedia: The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) straddled the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland, and so was not incorporated in either the CIE or UTA. However, mounting losses saw the network purchased jointly by the Irish and British governments on 1 September 1953. It was run as a joint board, independent of the CIE and UTA, until 30 September 1958 when it was dissolved and the remaining stock split equally between the two railways. Class VS: Numbers 206-210

    Mentioned in this pdf as one of the first candidates for preservation by the RPI in the 70s, but they didn't have funds. It was used for an outing on the Belfast to Dublin line in April 1964. Steam was already finished in the Republic in 1964 when these photos were taken, but some steam locos were still used in the North for shunting and freight.

    How the times have changed? Steam is but a memory and not for too many either, throwing the ash out like that would never by tolerated now, using a shovel would not be an option and a vacuum extractor would be in place and the worker would have to wear a heap of PPE and be in a harnes in case he fell off the engine. Great study and very clear shot.

    It looks as if there are points near the camera, suggesting that this is the whole bridge - quite short all right.

    I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the distant signal with a swallow-tail and a bobble and spike on top is a GWR feature and we should maybe be looking in the UK.
