For those who care about details, the Florida Memory site has reidentified this as the interior of a Sikorsky S-42, which was a few years newer than the S-40, and has re-dated the photo to circa 1934. The windows seem to be the telltale feature--the closely spaced porthole-shaped windows here are distinctive to the S-42. Most of the S-40's windows were rectangular, and those that were porthole-shaped were spaced much more widely.

Colin Howell Thanks for reminding us - I've updated this record as well.

Comfy, but wonder how the passengers felt at rough landings.. Never completely happy with the relatively primitive nature of its design, Pan Am asked Sikorsky to work on an improved model (the Sikorsky S-42 clipper) even as the S-40 was first entering service, and only three S-40 clippers were ever built:: NC-80V: American Clipper NC-81V: Caribbean Clipper NC-752V: Southern Clipper
