    Isabella Augusta Persse was born on 15 March 1852.1 She was the daughter of Dudley Persse and Frances Barry.3 She married Rt. Hon. Sir William Henry Gregory, son of Robert Gregory and Elizabeth O'Hara, on 4 March 1880.1 She died on 22 May 1932 at age 80.
    Isabella Augusta Persse usually went by her middle name of Augusta.2 From 4 March 1880, her married name became Gregory.
    Yeats wrote 'she had made the people part of her soul.1' She was co-founder of Abbey Theatre, Dublin.1 She was a playwright.

In 1911–12 she accompanied the Abbey players on an American tour and oversaw the response to protests organised by Irish-American activists such as John Devoy (qv) against the staging of the ‘Playboy’. During this visit to America she had a brief affair with John Quinn (qv) and discovered the profits obtainable by lecturing to American audiences; she returned to America for a lecture tour in 1913. The ‘Playboy’ tour of America also gave rise to her semi-official and decidedly selective history of the company, Our Irish theatre (1913), written in the form of letters to her grandson Richard (b. 1909). ...

    ... Another part which Dublin theatregoers considered she made her own was the Widow Quin in ‘The playboy of the western world’ by J. M. Synge (qv). However, the critic Hugh Hunt (qv), assessing her career, noted that she played all her famous character parts in the same manner: ‘Large, warm-hearted, with a permanent twinkle in her eye . . . Maureen was not a great actress, but she was a superb performer. For over twenty years she was to play herself on the stage without varying her characterisation by a twitch of her eyebrow, to the utter delight of her public’ (Hunt, 118). The Dublin audience's appreciation probably prevented her development and froze her mannerisms; the American critic George Jean Nathan, writing on the Abbey's 1937 American tour, called the company ‘a caricature of its former self . . .
