Hat in the Ring Sq

    94th Aero Squadron ("Hat in the Ring Squadron"), 1st Pursuit Group, fighter pilot Samuel Kaye, Jr.'s SPAD XIII, nicknamed the "Acrobatic Easter Egg." The aircraft was reportedly painted light blue with red and white polka dots. Kaye was credited with four confirmed aerial victories during World War I.

Righting an overturned plane -- France (LOC)

    The plane is a Nieuport 28 wearing the "hat in the ring" emblem of the 94th Aero Squadron. The 94th were training in their new Nieuports in France in Spring 1918.

    "Ⓒ C.P.I." is interesting CPI refers to the Committee on Public Information, an "independent" US agency during WWI established to drum up support at home for the war in Europe.
