Same photo on Smithsonian's site has this caption: While the Clintons and Gores watch, Chelsea Clinton rings a replica of the Liberty Bell during festivities kicking off the Clinton/Gore Inaugural. At the stroke of 6 p.m., Clinton and Gore grasped the red rope attached to the bell and led the nation in a bell ringing ceremony. Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, kept up the ringing long after her father let go of the rope.

From the Washington Post, December 18, 1992: The Liberty Bell replica was cast in 1976 for the Bicentennial celebration by the same Pennsylvania foundry that cast the original bell, which cracked when it was rung to herald the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

"kept up he ringing" should probably have an extra "t" in there somewhere ; ]

great shot

Brilliant photography, excellent shot. I like the use of light and the DoF. The colors are perfect. This has been a great day for the US and there will be one more tomorrow. Please comment on my pics, too. Gina from Germany

This is 97 isn't it? Older Chelsea and Newt's in the picture (he only ascended to Speaker in 94)... or am I mistaken?

The date says '93.

Actually, I realized that the date says 93 - I was questioning that date, thus my question... the people in the photo made no sense (and Clinton's hair seems pretty gray for first term) given the date (to me, but I'm willing to be wrong... :)
