Harry Houdin, entertainer, 1863 / photographer unknown

There's magic! Harry Houdini was born 11 years after this was taken. Maybe best to take it as written, with out the last "i"
  • State Library of New South Wales said:
Thanks for the tip, kicksonrt66 - our fault! This Harry Houdin was a 'polynational mimic' who entertained audiences with his ability to imitate accents and national characteristics, as well as 'drawing room magic'. nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39556993

Harry Houdini named himself after this guy, he was so impressed.
  • Interval Magic said:
To mich_sydney_2007: Actually, that's not true. Houdini named himself after Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, a pioneering French conjurer of the 19th century. As a child, Houdini (whose real name was Ehrich Weiss) read Robert-Houdin's memoirs, idolized the man, and thought that adding an "i" to the end of Houdin meant to be "like Houdin," and thus the name Houdini was born. Harry Houdin, the man in the photo above, claimed to be Robert-Houdin's nephew.
