Bypassing the empty single-track tunnel, which is still there.

This is actually much closer to Hawkesbury River station, than to Cowan.

Yes and the tunnel is the disused Boronia No. 5 which was in fact constructed for double track. An excellent Cowan Bank scene from the steam era!
