Fantastic scene - it looks way bigger in this image than it seems in real life, although that's because it's hard to judge the size when standing beside it.

It's a little hard to tell at the available resolution, but the figurines appear to be from Hindu mythology, in which various gods have mounts known as vahana, some of them winged, such as eagles, parrots, geese or swans: www.britannica.com/topic/vahana

Fraser Pettigrew : I agree that these look like gods on their vahanas. However, in lots of googling, I haven't found anything in quite this style. BTW, there are much higher-res images at hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/hec.36964 assuming you have a TIFF viewer. To me the one on the left looks female with a mount that is a bird. swanq Yes, I worked out the high-res link eventually! Doh! I'm thinking that the one on the left is probably Vishnu on his vahana Garuda (an eagle). I absolutely agree that these look Balinese. The 1932/3 date is before the independence of what became Indonesia from the Netherlands (Dutch East Indies). See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia#Colonial_era I was wondering if this delivery could be associated with an embassy, but it's not clear what the Dutch would have been doing with Balinese artifacts.
