Likewise if you were from Grimsby the chances were you'd end up in an armoured trawler fighting the submarine menace (like Gainsborough Trinity goalkeeper Jim Bagshaw). But yes, difficult to find a suitable role for a shirt-cutter.

Your observation is an interesting one. The well dressed adults (overcoats, shoes and hats) on a cold damp looking day, is a harsh contrast to the young barefoot child with just a jumper and shorts. When browsing through Mount Saint Lawrence’s Cemetery burial records, it’s therefore not surprising to see a high ratio of children dying young at that time. Many tough kids had to survive Frank McCourt’s Limerick.

That poor man will never be able to pull that contraption all the way to Ardnacrusha! A factor in it's positioning is that most of the houses in Georgian Limerick had coal cellars that went out under the streets and might not have borne the weight of the Steam Shovel. You will note that it is in the centre of the roadway where it was strongest.

This is actually much sharper that the other shot though not enough to be definitive about the time which I take to be 1205? but I wouldn't bet on it. The architect/town planner had a great eye for setting off his building to perfection, the line of Georgian houses leading down to the elegant church with clock tower at the end, very nice view.

Aeroplane Disaster? "On 5th July 1912, Captain E.B. Loraine and Staff-Sergeant R.H.V. Wilson were killed near the junction of the A344, A360 and B3086 grid reference SU098429. They were flying a Nieuport Monoplane and when making a tight turn the aeroplane plunged toward the ground and crashed." Edit: Does this billboard say "Daily News and Leader"? The paper was only called that from sometime in 1912, when the Daily News merged with the Morning Leader.

Niall McAuley Just double-checked original, and it is indeed the Daily News & Leader!! So, changing to Circa 1912 for both of these photos. But going to leave the question mark in situ for a wee while longer, though 1912 is looking very promising, especially given your Aeroplane Disaster find above...
