History Redcliffe says the project had the desired effect and also helped bring the Peninsula up to speed with Brisbane. The Houghton Highway bridge was built alongside it between 1977-79, and the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge was added in 2010. The Hornibrook Bridge was mostly demolished in 2011 due to safety concerns. One of the first projects to use the "new mix" by Queensland Cement and Lime (QCL). This 'new mix' included crushed dead coral, rather than lime. Full production of cement using coral started in 1937 at QCL factory at Darra.
