Hmmm. Assuming these lemonade vats are approx. the same size as the largest Guinness ones, that means a British Army strength of about 290 000 men.

If it's of any help, I have a copy of this book published by Guinness's in 1928 in which this picture and most of Mason's Guinness photographs in the NLI collection are seen. The title under this one is " A corner of No.11 Vat House". "Storage Vats. The Stout having been separated as much as possible from its yeast is then run into large measuring tanks, whence it is pumped into huge vats and stored for various periods according to its quality and the market for which it is intended. The longest storage is given to the foreign Extra Stout, as this is designed for bottling for hot climates and has to be fully matured before exportation. The largest vats are capable of holding about 90,000gallons. Largest Vat Capacity St.James gate........... 90,324 Gallons. Total Vat Capacity St.James gate...........14,782,560 Gallons If it was a commission I'd imagine Mason took them not too long beforehand, possibly 1926/7 ?.. but with the reference to the British army they could well have been reproduced from earlier publications....there seems to have been a few.

You can apparently get a hardwood floor made from these vats.
