  I'm almost positive that this is the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), a light cruiser. It may be the USS Portland (CA-33) though.

  CA- heavy cruiser. Could be either Indianapolis or Portland. Both were in the Pacific in 1941, and the DANFS is a little vague about precise whereabouts. Indianapolis went on the become flagship for Admiral Ray Spruance when he was commanding 5th fleet.

  That's the USS Chicago. When the ship was lost in January 1943, they tried to suppress the news at first. Many people in Brisbane remembered the March 1941 visit and felt a real sense of loss because they had met and in many cases given hospitality to the sailors during that earlier visit.

  Almost has to be Portland, not Chicago. The bridge is a dead givaway. Here's Chicago's bridge: (after being rammed by a tanker in 1933)
