    the French were retreating (and the Germans advancing) so fast that they were barely able to stop for food or water for days. horses dropped dead, and man passed out in the ditches. Those that could not keep up were captured or died.

The T&CJ didn't indicate where the pic was taken. This is the earliest publication I've found so far...
