The Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani is a monastery near Bardstown, Kentucky, in Nelson County, a part of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Ordo Cisterciensis Strictioris Observantiae), better known as the Trappists. Founded on 21 December 1848 and raised to an abbey in 1851, Gethsemani is considered to be the motherhouse of all Trappist and Trappistine monasteries in the United States of America. In June 1952, Cardinal Norman Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney, visited Mount Saint Joseph Abbey, Roscrea in Ireland and formally requested its abbot, Dom Camillus Claffey that he make a foundation in the Archdiocese of Sydney,

The Examination Hall appears to have been demolished in recent years: maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,609797,603942,11,9 It is visible on the 25" map to the left of the building marked 'School' and is also visible on the aerial image from 1995, but it isn't there on the 2000 and 2005 images.

From his bio there: he designed some buildings at Mount Melleray Abbey, which were demolished in 1997. He presented the monks with a stone carving of the Virgin which surmounted these buildings and which has been retained. So may be unrelated.

The church shown is also gone: replaced by a big Gothic church built from the stone from Mitchelstown Castle of recent memory:

Two of the NIAH pieces on Mount Melleray mention slate re-roofing and works in 1910 - from this and the Beary reference, I'll guess this is 1910-15. [Edit - nope!]

I think today's photo is a fair while before this Keogh Bros one from 1911 (with a motor car). Particularly the creeper on the right -

The railings and lamps (and presumably stairs) are there in the 1911 photo, but not there on the 25" map. Forgotten how to find the map date, but someone will know ...
