The Toll Gate and Toll House on Lower Sandgate Road, Folkestone, Kent. Victoria Pier is in the distance. Lower Sandgate Road was a private toll road running from the harbour to Sandgate and belonged to the Radnor Estate. The brick Toll House was designed by the eminent architect Sir Sidney Smirke, who was responsible for the impressive British Museum's Reading Room, York Minster's nave roof and the Charlton Club in Pall Mall London. It was built in 1847 and replaced the original wooden toll house. Tolls were collected until 1973. In 1980 the Toll House was sold and is occupied today as a private residence. [1] [2] There's an interesting collection of photographs of the Toll Gate House – from the early days to present day – at The Toll Gate.
