Full description reads: ST. JOHN'S RIVER. OLD JETTY AND WAREHOUSES - The territory in the neighbourhood of Port St. John's was secured by the Imperial Government from Umgolizo, a native chief, in 1878. Owing to the European Powers annexing various parts of the Continent of South Africa, Pondoland was placed under the protection of Great Britain, and the country was afterwards ceded to Cape Colony in 1894. The Port itself is situated at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River, which inside the "Bar," is a magnificent estuary, extending several miles into the country. At present the trade done is small, but its prospects are improving. Three steamers of light draught convey cargo between the port and Durban and East London.

I stand to be corrected on this, but this mountain skyline is too distinctive to be anything but Mount Ndirande on the immediate northern outskirts of Blantyre, Nyasaland, now Malawi.As a child attending the government High School of St Andrew's I climbed this mountain so many times.There cannot be another in Rhodesia that is so alike, surely??? Have managed to zoom in and read the small print below this photo which says the picture is of the Cape Flats near Durban????Still think it's Ndirande in Malawi! Come on all you Federal Saints out there, support my comments!! Geof Acton, Mackay, Qld 13/02/11.

Ok. The Cape Flats TOWARDS Durban, is how the note reads! That makes the suggestion that this is Table Mountain.What do others think?

This is not a phograph, it's a watercolour with pen. The artist has clearly used their creative skills to render a train leaving Cape Town on it's way to Bulawayo. The locomotive is too small to have embarked on such a journey (the boiler is too small for the distances to be covered) and I think this whole picture is some artist's idea of what it would look like. This representative style was commonly used by publications like "The London Illustrated News" to portray "photo-like" images when photos were not available. Richard

It's copied "From a photo by D. Edwards(?)" and categorically states "Cape Flats". Looks like a partial back view of Table Mountain with Devil's Peak on the right.
