CWGC website shows that he was the son of the late Major H. C. Wilkinson; husband of Gladys Mary Wilkinson (nee Rowlands). Served in the South African war. Medal Roll Index Card gives an address: 14 Chapel Park Road, St Leonard's on Sea. Major Henry Chandler Wilkinson was in residence at Plas Newydd Hall, Denbighshire in 1881 aged 46 and described as Retired from the Army. Sidney was then aged 3, born in Gillingham, Dorset. His baptism record of 9th September 1877 shows that he was born at Wyke Hall, Gillingham, Dorset and that his mother was Eleanor Lydia Grey (des Voex). The property still exists, although it has been sub-divided search.struttandparker.com/residential/wyke-hall-gillingh...

At the time of the 1911 census he was a pupil at Kingswood School, aged 17. His place of birth was given as Pietermaritzburg, Natal.
His Medal Roll Index Card shows that he was Private 1562 in the Royal Highlanders before transferring to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. -
